The Green Bay Packers figure to be in the mix for multiple free agents this off-season. It is no secret that the Packers will have a focus on improving the defense in 2024. They have already moved on from former All-Pro Linebacker De’Vondre Campbell.
Now they are turning their focus to the free agent market, and one is at the top of their list.
The Green Bay Packers Make It Obvious That One Free Agent Is Top Priority
According to Senior NFL Insider for The Athletic Dianna Russini:
Safety Xavier McKinney is a top target for the Green Bay Packers and the Philadelphia Eagles. The Giants would like to keep him.
The Green Bay Packers are in desperate need of a safety in the 2024 NFL offseason, and Xavier McKinney is one name that hit the free agent market last week. Neither the franchise tag nor the transition tag was given to him by the New York Giants.
Xavier McKinney Would Be A Huge Get For The Packers
During his last season with the Giants, he recorded 116 tackles, 0.5 sacks, one forced fumble, two fumble recoveries, three interceptions, and 11 pass deflections. Over the past few seasons, the Giants’ fanbase has known how important he was to that defense. The 24-year-old Alabama product was drafted in the second round of the 2020 NFL Draft (36th overall).
The Packers need a playmaker in the secondary. The Athletic’s Matt Schneidman believes a push for McKinney is crucial this off-season:
“The Packers’ top three safeties from last season — Darnell Savage Jr., Jonathan Owens and Rudy Ford — are all set to be unrestricted free agents.
McKinney is positioned to be the best safety on the market after the Tampa Bay Buccaneers tagged Antoine Winfield Jr. The position is arguably Green Bay’s biggest need this offseason as it enters Year 1 under defensive coordinator Jeff Hafley, who is keen on play-making post safeties who roam the deep middle of the field. McKinney had three interceptions, 11 passes defensed, a forced fumble and two fumble recoveries while starting all 17 games for the New York Giants last season.
Derrick Ansley, 42, was the defensive backs coach at Alabama, where he was the lead recruiter for McKinney, who played for the Crimson Tide. What does Ansley do now? He’s the Packers’ new defensive pass game coordinator.”
