The Green Bay Packers will have 11 selections in the 2024 NFL Draft. Green Bay’s needs for this draft season will be running back, safety, cornerback, and offensive line. General manager Brian Gutekunst has done a very nice job over the past couple of seasons finding talent through the NFL Draft.
They are possibly a year away from being a serious Super Bowl contender. Matt Schneidman of The Athletic did a seven-round mock draft for the Packers on Monday. He only has the Packers taking one running back for now in the 2024 NFL Draft.
The running back he has the Green Bay Packers taking is Marshawn Lloyd from USC in the fourth round with the 126th overall pick. The reasoning Schneidman gave as to why Green Bay would make this selection then is because:
“It would be a surprise if the Packers re-sign AJ Dillon, so they’ll probably need a new backup for Aaron Jones. That could be either 2023 undrafted free agent Emanuel Wilson, who flashed promise as a rookie out of Division II Fort Valley State, or someone they draft. Lloyd spent two years at South Carolina before transferring to USC, where he ran for 7.1 yards per carry on 116 rushes last season while catching 13 passes for 232 yards. He caught 18 passes for 176 yards and two touchdowns the season prior for the Gamecocks.”
The Green Bay Packers May Need to Draft More Than One Running Back in the 2024 NFL Draft
Green Bay may need to draft more than one running back depending on what happens over the next few weeks. Aaron Jones can very well be cut if both sides don’t agree to a restructured contract for the 2024 season. AJ Dillon is a free agent and the Packers are not going to bring him back most likely.
Can undrafted free agent Emanuel Wilson be trusted in a bigger role next season? It seems as if the Packers will need to draft more than one running back in the 2024 NFL Draft. Marshawn Lloyd would be a good selection for Green Bay in the fourth round.
According to NFLDRAFTBUZZ.com, some of his strengths are:
“He’s solid in blitz pickup, and Lloyd consistently showed the ability to anchor against bigger players. Lloyd brings a nice blend of power and passing game skills. Lloyd has a compact build and a naturally low center of gravity, and he runs with excellent balance through traffic, allowing him to squeeze through for yardage.”
Some of his weaknesses are:
“Too indecisive and hesitant at the line of scrimmage. Lloyd doesn’t have the ability as a run blocker or the violent run-after-catch ability.”
If Aaron Jones is around next season for the Green Bay Packers, this would be a nice selection for them as the number two running back. If Jones is not back, then they are going to have draft another running back other than Marshawn Lloyd.
