Green Bay Packers Likely Lose Out On #1 Top Free Agency Target

The Green Bay Packers experienced problems in the safety position throughout the 2023-24 season. This was expected before the season started as it was identified as the weakest link of an otherwise talented defensive depth chart. This can be quickly identified through PFF rankings, where the Packers highest rated safety of the 2023-24 season came in at a lowly 69.9 in Rudy Ford which ranks only 32nd among league safeties.

Naturally, the Green Bay Packers will find themselves looking towards free agency to help alleviate their struggles in the safety position. Luckily for them, the free agency class seems to be stacked with notable safeties ranging in skill sets. From top-tier box safeties like New England Patriots Kyle Dugger, versatile pieces like New York Giants Xavier Mckinney or Washington Commanders Kamren Curl, and even ball hawks like Baltimore Ravens Geno Stone.

Given that the Packers GM Brian Gutekunst openly stated that they will be active in free agency, it is no secret that they will pursue talent to compete in the weakest spot of their roster. It is doubly easy to presume given that the Packers’ new defensive coordinator Jeff Hafley’s idea for the defense calls for a talented safety to take a large load off the back end of the secondary. If the Green Bay Packers could pursue an elite-level safety, they would likely take their best shot.

    Green Bay Packers Superstar Option

One safety that falls under the “elite” moniker that has failed to be mentioned is Tampa Bay Buccaneers’ Antoine Winfield Jr. (son of former Minnesota Vikings cornerback Antoine Winfield Sr.) A dream scenario for the Packers would be to acquire this star defensive back, as his ratings (91.5 2023-24 PFF) and tape put to shame anybody in the Packers’ safety position since Micah Hyde.

The Packers met Antoine Winfield Jr in 2023, a game in Lambeau Field where they lost to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. In this game Winfield made his presence felt, leading the Buccaneers in tackles. Antoine Winfield is slated to be a free agent in 2024, partially because of this game, it is unlikely the Packers did not put Winfield on their “most wanted” list.

    Bad News For The Packers

Despite the likely interest for Antoine Winfield, it seems the Packers will never get the chance to give him an offer. Exiting the NFL Combine draft analyst and journalist Tony Pauline provided some news that the Green Bay Packers front office and fans alike did not want to hear.

“Word in Indianapolis late Saturday night is that the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and star safety Antoine Winfield are zeroing in on a multi- year contract that would prevent them from placing the franchise tag on the defensive back. The word in the Circle City is that the deal looks like it will be in the area of three years, $60 million, an average of $20 million per season. Sources tell me a fourth year could be added to the contract.”- Tony Pauline

The deal described by Pauline would equate to the highest-paid safety deal of all time. However, this can not be a surprise, as the league announced an increased salary cap for the 2024 NFL season. Record-breaking contracts are expected to be commonplace as the market resets itself. In conjunction with the fact that Winfield is coming off of the strongest season of his young career, earning himself a first-team all-pro, it is no surprise that the Tampa Bay Buccaneers would prefer to keep their talent in-house despite the hefty price tag.

So for the Packers, it is likely the best-case scenario will not be an option for them by the time free agency starts on March 11th. Luckily for the Green Bay Packers, there is plenty of talent outside of the best for them to shop around for. But they must do some shopping at the safety position if they plan to make a run for a Superbowl.
