The Green Bay Packers quarterback room will be a much-talked-about focus of OTA practices over the next month and into training camp, and an All-Pro could be thrown into the mix. The Packers have relied on Aaron Rodgers for over a decade to win games for Green Bay. Now that he’s gone, the franchise’s hope is on Jordan Love.
There isn’t really a question about the starting quarterback job in Green Bay. That’s Love’s heading into September. The bigger problem for the Packers is one they haven’t since drafting him. The Packers will have Danny Etling and fifth-round pick Sean Clifford battling for the right to back up Love. Should Love get injured, the Packers could be in big trouble.
The Green Bay Packers are predicted to land an All-Pro QB
Bill Barnwell with ESPN recently wrote about his predictions of post-NFL draft moves that teams could make. He thinks the Packers’ best option for a sure backup quarterback is All-Pro quarterback Carson Wentz:
“The Packers are in transition after trading away Aaron Rodgers. Jordan Love is taking over as their new starter, but the quarterbacks behind him on the roster are Danny Etling and rookie fifth-rounder Sean Clifford.
As we saw with Trey Lance a year ago, it takes only one hit for a succession plan to go awry in September. And while the 49ers were able to turn to Jimmy Garoppolo and then Brock Purdy with plenty of success, most quarterbacks drafted on Day 3 with zero career pass attempts won’t play as well as Purdy did in December.
An injury to Love would essentially end the Packers’ season, which is an argument for signing Wentz. The argument against the move comes down to the off-field stuff: Do you want to have your young quarterback in a room with a guy who has essentially been dumped by three NFL organizations in three seasons? Coach Matt LaFleur would have to ask himself whether the reward is worth the risk”
Will the Packers sign Wentz?
I think the answer is no. If Love goes down, the Packers’ season is over, regardless of Wentz’s availability on the sideline. The skilled players on offense are too young to overcome losing their starting quarterback this season. The current roster makes the postseason a long shot heading into the summer. Signing Wentz is a waste of cap space when there are other starting contributors they can find for the 2023 team.

I’d rather them consider Tannehill
Danny Etling is better than Wentz
