The Green Bay Packers made public plans to make Jordan Love their starter at quarterback this season, but one rookie has his eyes on being Aaron Rodgers’ replacement. The Packers have given some measure of faith to Love, as they extended him through the 2024 season, although the deal reads as more of a hedge than if the team had just offered him a fifth-year option. There are reports that the organization is trying “preach patience” for the former 2020 first-round pick ahead of the 2023 season.
Jordan Love is preparing as the Green Bay Packers’ quarterback
Love acknowledged in his press conference Wednesday that he knows this season will be a challenge, not just for him but for the entire Packers team as a whole. Love is stepping into the footsteps of one the greatest quarterbacks of all time. The roster is full of rookies and sophomores playing in positions veterans have had for a few years. One rookie, fifth-round pick Sean Clifford, recently said he’s competing for a roster spot and more.
According to Bill Huber with Sports Illustrated, Clifford said he couldn’t wait to compete with Love and Danny Etling for a quarterback spot on the 53-man roster this summer. Clifford said he wanted to go against the best, including Love:
“You want to go against the best,” Clifford said. “That’s why I’m excited to go against Danny and Jordan because they’re such great players. They’re really good human beings. Jordan called me right after the draft, congratulated me.
“Danny, I’ve been with just today, but just the opportunity to be here with him, I learned a lot about what his background is like, the places he’s been. He’s not holding anything back from me. I’m really being a sponge. It’s just compete and have fun and do what I love, which is playing the game.”
It’s probably not Sean Clifford’s time yet
Love has no time to enjoy being the starting quarterback. That’s the life of an NFL player and especially a quarterback. Love was in Clifford’s shoes a few years ago, as he was learning to control what he could control as he battled Rodgers for a starting spot.
It’s highly unlikely Clifford would show enough as a rookie this summer to take Love’s job on the depth chart. But Clifford shows he has a competitive attitude and wants to improve as an NFL quarterback. Clifford’s hard work could pay off if something were to happen to Love later this season.
