The Green Bay Packers made the decision to finally move on from defensive coordinator Joe Barry. It was a move that many Packers fans anticipated happening following the defensive performance much of this last season. Now the search is on for the next DC in Green Bay.
One former All-Pro could potentially make a return to Green Bay following Joe Barry’s firing as well as his uncertainty with his current team.
Former Green Bay Packers’ Safety Has The Chance To Reunite With The Team
According to Rexwell Villas:
“Bills safety Micah Hyde said he’s up in the air as to whether or not he’ll continue his playing career. Hyde, 33, is a free agent in March.”
However, Hyde also said that he’s going to take some time before making a final decision on his future in the pros.
“I just have no idea what the future holds right now,” Hyde said, per Mark Gaughan of Buffalo News. “I’m going to sit down, maybe in a couple weeks or something, and talk to the wife and talk to the family. But we’ll see. I’m in no rush, no rush at all.”
Hyde missed most of the 2022 NFL season because of a neck injury and then played 14 games in the 2023 campaign. He was sidelined for the other four outings in 2023 after sustaining a stinger after absorbing a hit in a game versus the Cincinnati Bengals. He was able to make it back in time for the Bills’ final four assignments of the season and play in the playoffs. Against the Chiefs, Hyde posted four total tackles.
Micah Hyde Started His Career With The Packers
In the 2013 NFL Draft, Hyde was selected by the Green Bay Packers in the fifth round (159th overall). He signed a five-year contract worth $30.5 million with the Bills in 2017 and a two-year extension worth $19.25 million in 2021.
It never made sense for the Packers not to re-sign Micah Hyde. He gave his all to the Packers. In addition to playing safety and cornerback, Hyde returned three punts for touchdowns.
The Packers didn’t offer him a new contract despite him being one of the the only positives in the pass defense’s disastrous 2016 season.
And Hyde made them pay for that mistake. He was named a Pro Bowler and second-team All-Pro in his first season in Buffalo.
The Packers may have a chance to have Hyde end his career where it began in a season (2024) where there is a ton of optimism and a new look defense.
