The Green Bay Packers will miss some things about Aaron Rodgers
The Green Bay Packers are moving on with Jordan Love as the starter. The Packers have yet to officially trade Aaron Rodgers to the New York Jets, but that should happen before the 2023 NFL Draft. Rodgers has had an incredible run during his time with the Packers. Packers fans have felt they’ve had a chance to win most games, even when they have started some contests with decent deficits. One NFL executive thinks Rodgers will take that magic with him.
The Athletic recently published quotes from NFL executives on how each team’s free agency moves went. Most of the executives think Rodgers can still play at an elite level. One cited the success of quarterbacks Peyton Manning, Tom Brady, and Matthew Stafford when they went to new teams later in their career. Another executive illustrated an in-game situation they feel Love won’t be able to replicate for the Packers in the post-Rodgers era:
“I saw him coming back from a 14-point deficit in the fourth quarter against Chicago (last season),” this exec countered. “That is not going to happen with Jordan Love as the quarterback. Just not how it works.”
Love needs to be given a fair chance
It was how it worked for the Packers when Rodgers replaced Brett Favre–at least after he had time to grow into that role. Love should be allowed to see if he can do the same. The Packers were down considerably when Love came in as Rodgers’ backup against the Philadelphia Eagles last season. While the Packers didn’t win the game, Love led a comeback in the fourth quarter and gave the team a chance.
Love will need to be given some grace next season as he starts his first entire season with a rebuilding roster. But Love has shown in his limited playing time he can perform in high-stress situations.
