The Green Bay Packers and Dallas Cowboys will both enter the 2024 season with expectations of making the playoffs again. The Cowboys had Super Bowl aspirations all season long in 2023. The Packers spent the 2023 season attempting to figure out if they had another franchise quarterback on their hands (side note: they do).
Now the Packers and Cowboys are being named in a trade that would shake up both teams in a pretty significant way.
The Green Bay Packers And Dallas Cowboys Pegged To Pull Off Huge Trade
Matthew Schmidt of NFL Analysis highlighted this scenario:
Do the Cowboys need Alexander? Not necessarily, as they will be getting Trevon Diggs back from a torn ACL next season, and DaRon Bland had a breakout 2023. However, they will likely be losing Stephon Gilmore to free agency, and in a heavy passing league where having several good cornerbacks is becoming more and more important, Dallas may sniff around to see if it can snatch Alexander away from Green Bay.
If the Cowboys offer the Packers a 2024 first-round draft pick for Alexander, Green Bay may very well just pull the trigger.
Alexander is in the middle of a four-year, $84 million contract that runs through 2026. He recently made a cryptic but yet not-so-cryptic post on social media where he thanked Green Bay fans for the last six years, an indication that the star defensive back thinks his time with the Packers may be coming to an end.
It was certainly a rough season for Alexander, who played in just seven games due to injuries and a suspension. His antics may be wearing thin on the organization, and even though he is a terrific cornerback when he is healthy, Green Bay may be wondering whether or not he is worth it anymore.
The Cowboys are a team that is in desperate need of a boost. They have logged three straight 12-win campaigns, and yet, they have still failed to make it past the Divisional Round. This year, the Packers beat Dallas in the Wild Card Round. As a matter of fact, Alexander picked off Dak Prescott in that game.
Would The Packers Ever Trade Jaire Alexander?
It doesn’t make financial sense to move on from Alexander at this time. The team and Alexander signed a four-year, $84 million extension last season. There was only a $30 million signing bonus guaranteed out of that $84 million at the time. During Alexander’s five-year contract, that bonus was prorated (at $6 million per year) over the salary cap.
Thus, Alexander’s base dead cap (the cost to trade or release him) in 2024 would be $18 million (the remaining signing bonus dead cap). A large portion of Alexander’s 2023 money was also restructured as a bonus. If the team decides to move on from Alexander in 2024, that new bonus will add another $9.4 million to the dead cap total.
On top of the financials, Alexander is a leader on this team and Matt LaFleur has been vocal about his admiration for the All-Pro.
