According to multiple reports, Green Bay Packers defensive coordinator Joe Barry was fired on Wednesday. After Green Bay’s Week 15 loss to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, the Packers defensive coordinator knew he was on the hot seat.
While the news was somewhat expected throughout Packer Nation, there was another move that happened today that did take some fans by surprise.
The Green Bay Packers Move On From Their Strength And Conditioning Coach After Firing Joe Barry
According to Tom Silverstein:
Packers strength and conditioning coach Chris Gizzi has been fired, according to two league sources.
Gizzi was a S and C assistant from 2014-‘18 and was promoted to his current job when Matt LaFleur became head coach. Gizzi played for the team in 2000-‘01.
Gizzi attended the Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs before joining the NFL. In 1996-97, he earned back-to-back Western Athletic Conference Defensive Player of the Year awards, only the second player in the Academy’s history to do so. As a senior, he led the WAC with 179 tackles.
As part of his commitment to the Air Force, he spent the 1998 and 1999 seasons on the reserve/military list while he began his professional football career with the Denver Broncos.
Gizzi began his Packers career in 2000, playing 11 games that season, and returned in 2013 as an intern before becoming an assistant strength and conditioning coach.
While the move was a little surprising, it may have made sense given the significant amount of hamstring injuries over the years. Many have contributed that phenomenon to the strength and conditioning coach. It will certainly be interesting to see what the Packers do with this position going forward.
