The Green Bay Packers are still in the thick of the NFC playoff race even after their brutal loss to the New York Giants. The Packers had a chance to separate themselves from the eight seed Los Angeles Rams, however, they sputtered in New York and remain in an extremely tight race.
While the defense has plenty of talent to go around, is is clear there are still holes here and there. Many fans argue (and they might be right) that defensive coordinator Joe Barry is the biggest “hole” the team has on defense. That being said, the Packers could add to one position on the defense that may have an opening in the near future.
The Green Bay Packers Listed As Top Team To Trade For Los Angeles Chargers Star Edge Rusher Joey Bosa
Alex Ballentine of Bleacher Report highlighted how this trade could happen:
Packers Receive: EDGE Joey Bosa
Chargers Receive: 2024 first-round pick
The Packers have been at their most dominant when they’ve had two great pass rushers coming off the edge. Preston Smith, Za’Darius Smith and Rashan Gary formed a terrifying trio for opposing offenses for a few years before Za’Darius was released.
Now, Preston Smith is 31 years old and the team has an out in his contract after this season. Rashan Gary has taken over the role of top pass-rusher on the team and Lukas Van Ness is still a promising prospect. Trading for a veteran with the ability to take over a game would get the Packers back to where they once were.
If the Packers are going to take a big swing in the trade market, it would be worth it to call the Chargers about Bosa. The Chargers are 5-8 this season and big changes could be coming.
Will The Packers Make A Big Move For A Star Defensive Player?
The Packers defense ranks 23rd in the NFL in sacks (29). That feels a little underwhelming for a defensive front that has Rashan Gary and Preston Smith. Lukas Van Ness may very well be getting the “draft and development” treatment that Gary did.
Adding a bonafide pass rusher would be huge for the Van Ness’ transition as well as provide an immediate impact on the defense. Joey Bosa has been the subject of trade rumors since before the season even started. It is not unrealistic to think the Chargers will at least consider it this off-season.
The Packers certainly have the draft capital to make a move in 2024, will they do it?
Stay in the loop with the Green Bay Packers as they navigate the NFL season. Amidst trade rumors, the team is reportedly eyeing a major addition to their defense with 4x Pro Bowl defender Joey Bosa.
