The Green Bay Packers have been at the center of scrutiny all season long. Four straight losses have placed the Packers at 2-5 on the year after a promising 2-1 start. The offense’s inability to stay on the field and score first half points have proved to be detrimental so far this year.
Many fans and analysts have wrote off the Packers in 2023 and are already looking at what they can and should do next off-season. One EPSN analyst suggest one cut the Packers could make that would save money, but at what cost to the team?
ESPN Lists A Surprising Cut Candidate For The Green Bay Packers

ESPN insider Dan Graziano predicts that the Packers will make a drastic decision on Aaron Jones in 2024 due to their focus on the future, Jones’ inability to remain healthy, and the lack of significant cap space:
“Aaron Jones will have one year left after this season on a deal he had to rework this past offseason to avoid being cut. The Packers would save $11.45 million next year in cap space if they made him a post-June 1 cut,” Graziano wrote.
“David Bakhtiari is the most obvious cap-saving move for Green Bay, but his circumstances are different and well-publicized. Moving on from Jones would be a future-focused decision and one more piece of evidence that it’s tough for a running back in these salary cap streets.”
Is Cutting Aaron Jones Actually A Possibility For The Packers?

It is no secret that Aaron Jones has been the heart and soul of this offense. When he is on the field and receiving touches, the offense is night and day better. That being said, Jones will be 30-years-old by December of 2024. If the Packers really are “in” on the unofficial youth movement, it could turn into a possibility.
The other option could be trading him, however, the compensation they’d likely receive for a 29-year-old running back probably wouldn’t be enough to consider pulling the trigger. If both sides want to stay in this current situation, we’re probably looking at another contract renegotiation. Aaron Jones did take a $5 million pay cut to be in Green Bay this year.
If the Packers did decide to move on from Jones, the compensatory pick they’d receive the following year may be better than what they’d get in a trade.

If they cut him they wouldn’t get a compensatory pick. That’s only when a team signs your unrestricted free agent whose contract ran out. It’s why they have been big on trying to sign guys who were cut. Those contracts didn’t count against the net formula of guys coming and going when they determine who gets what.
