The Green Bay Packers are interviewing defense coordinators after ousting Joe Barry after three seasons.
With candidates like Don “Wink” Martindale, Jim Leonard, Ejiro Evero, and Al Harris. Green Bay will move cautiously to get this position on the coaching staff right.
On Friday, Green Bay has already gotten the ball rolling by interviewing the recent head coach of the Los Angeles Chargers, Brandon Staley, who is known in NFL circles as a bright defensive mind.
While his tenure with the Chargers didn’t work out, his acumen as a one-time defensive coordinator cannot be overstated, as in his lone season with the Los Angeles Rams, the team was 1st in scoring defense and T-10th in takeaways.
Chargers defense from 2021-23:
Scoring defense: 28th
Takeaways: T-19th
Yards allowed per game: 27thRams defense in 2020 with Staley as DC:

The fanbase made it known how they felt about the Green Bay Packers defensive coordinator target.
The Green Bay Packers fanbase slams the team’s defensive coordinator target.
This is a massive decision for the franchise. Green Bay hasn’t had an elite defensive coordinator in over two decades, and this is a decision that Matt LaFleur needs to knock out of the park. LaFleur hired one defensive coordinator, his friend Joe Barry, who he worked with in LA. That didn’t work out, and Green Bay’s had the talent on defense, but the issue has been the scheme.
The fans are making it known how they feel about this candidate.
Lord, if you’re listening, please anyone but him.

Staley was a great DC but not a great HC people forget that

No matter who the Packers hire, people will be mad. I'm just happy they decided to move on from Barry.

Spags KC Defense coordinator his defense underperformed when he was a head coach, it happens all the time. This guy was excellent when he was just a DC. Not my first choice. But would be a huge upgrade.

Fans forget how good Brandon Staley was in his brief tenure as DC because of his disastrous tenure in Los Angeles. Brandon Staley is better suited as a defensive coordinator than a head coach. The Green Bay Packers need to hire a DC who will infuse life into this defense. All of Green Bay’s defensive coordinators have been the same old-school coordinators who don’t play an aggressive style.
Hiring Staley would not only fix Green Bay’s defense but would mark that Matt LaFleur is comfortable deviating from the status quo. Two years ago, Green Bay hired highly sought-after ST Coordinator Rich Bisaccia would Brandon Staley be in the Bisaccia category of being a highly after assistant? Yes, and there will be a lot of interest in his services. It’ll be interesting to see if the Green Bay Packers can finally get the DC position right.
