The Green Bay Packers have some tough decisions to make in the offseason. After making it all the way to the divisional round of the NFL playoffs, they will now look to improve the team to build upon what they have achieved. However, that also means they might need to part ways with some players in order to upgrade certain positions.
Now, according to a recent piece by Cem Yolbulan of Dairyland Express, there are five players that the Packers could opt to move or allow to walk away freely as they hope to surround quarterback Jordan Love with better weapons and complementary pieces to possibly stage another postseason run.
Among those five names mentioned are running back AJ Dillon, safety Darnell Savage Jr., guard Jon Runyan Jr. and linebackers De’Vondre Campbell and Preston Smith.
As mentioned, the primary reasons Yolbulan indicated include salary cap restrictions and just the overall need for an upgrade.
Why Should the Green Bay Packers Part Ways with AJ Dillon, Darnell Savage Jr., Others?
AJ Dillon missed the Green Bay Packers’ postseason run this 2024 due to a neck stinger. Now, his future beyond remains uncertain. He is an unrestricted free agent this offseason, and Yolbulan suggested that the only way the Packers should keep him is if he signs a cheap one-year “prove-it” deal.
If not, the team could likely find better options with better upside than Dillon. The same can be said about Darnell Savage Jr., who is also a free agent and could very be unaffordable for the Green Bay franchise.
Meanwhile, Preston Smith could still be traded while he has some value, with the move opening up more opportunities for their other pass rushers in Lukas Van Ness and Kingsley Enagbare.
In De’Vondre Campbell’s case, with both Quay Walker and Isaiah McDuffie surpassing him, it no longer makes sense for Green Bay to pay him so much. Not to mention that Campbell is already declining.
As for Jon Runyan Jr., while he is a solid starter for the team, he could end up being the odd man out once the Packers look for upgrades. The report from Yolbulan noted that he’s “not a difference-maker,” which should make him replaceable.
Runyan is a free agent this 2024 as well, and so Green Bay might be better off paying someone else who could be more impactful.
