The Green Bay Packers were named a top fit for an All-Pro running back in free agency this offseason. The Packers are still alive in the postseason, but free agency is two months away. Who they pick up in March could determine how far the Packers will go in the playoffs in Jordan Love’s second season as a starter.
The Packers have the league’s youngest team this season. They impressed the NFL world by upsetting the Dallas Cowboys on the road with their youth movement squad. The Packers’ cap flexibility this offseason could allow them to add more veteran help for a deep playoff push in 2024.
The Green Bay Packers are a top fit for an All-Pro RB
Former Jacksonville Jaguars running back Maurice Jones-Drew wrote about the best bits for running backs in free agency next season for the NFL’s website. He thinks former Dallas Cowboys star running back Ezekiel Elliott would be a great replacement for AJ Dillon in 2024:
“Elliott had the worst statistical campaign of his career in his first season outside of Dallas, but I largely chalk that up to playing in a lackluster Patriots offense that never found its identity with Mac Jones and Bailey Zappe under center.
Likely headed elsewhere with New England trending toward a major rebuild, the veteran could join a young Packers team on a low-end deal, with Green Bay’s bruiser back, AJ Dillon, headed for free agency himself. Zeke would pair well with Aaron Jones, providing a physical element to the run game. Plus, Zeke’s a guy who could carry the load if Jones can’t stay healthy.”
A backfield in Green Bay with Elliott and Jones could be scary. Elliott is still a powerful runner. He also would be a huge help as a pass protector if the Packers decide to draft a lineman to move on from David Bakhtiari.
Elliott isn’t the same running back he was when he earned three Pro Bowl appearances in four seasons, but he could offer the Packers veteran leadership for a team looking to make a Super Bowl run next season.
