The 2022 edition of the Wisconsin High School Volleyball State Championship takes place from November 3rd through 5th at the Resch Center in Green Bay, Wisconsin. All four divisions will be in action at various times throughout the three days. Let’s take a look at the seeding for Division 1:
#1 Oconomowoc
Once again Oconomowc finds themselves with the #1 seed. As the reigning state champions, Oconomowoc comes in with a near perfect record. Michelle Bruss’s team only has one blemish on their record, a 2-0 loss to Divine Savior Holy Angels back on August 27th. Other than that, they’re 37-1 with 31 consecutive wins. Keep in mind, this team lost in the state championship game in both 2018 and 2019.
#2 Divine Savior Holy Angels
The Divine Savior Holy Angels are a fantastic 37-5 on the season and are the only team to defeat Oconomowoc this year. Similar to Oconomowoc, this team hasn’t dropped a single set in the playoffs and doesn’t seem to be slowing down anytime soon. Out of their five season losses, two of which are against Oconomowoc.
#3 Appleton North
Appleton North is the reigning state runner up who fell to Oconomowoc 25-18, 26-24, 25-21 at the Resch last season. With redemption on their mind, Steve Scheuerell’s squad posts a 32-4 record. One of their first losses of the season came to Kimberly in five sets, a team they swept in the Sectional Championship. They also fell to Burlington (#4 seed), Howards Grove (#1 seed, reigning three time state champion in Division 3), and Divine Savior Holy Angels (#2 seed).
#4 Burlington
For the second consecutive season, Burlington heads to Green Bay as the #4 seed. Last year they fell to #5 Kettle Moraine in five sets, a frustrating way to end such a great season. Burlington sits at 37-4 and haven’t lost since September 24th to #1 Oconomowoc. Similar to Appleton North, Burlington also has losses to Howards Grove and Divine Savior Holy Angels. This will be the 9th straight tournament for Burlington, a team that won it all in 2017 and 2018.
#5 Chippewa Falls
With just two losses on the season, Chippewa Falls is a team that knows they should’ve been in this position last year. With a 37-3 record, Chippewa Falls fell to River Falls in five sets in the Sectional Championship. This season, Chippewa Falls is 39-2 and took down River Falls in five sets to punch their ticket to the Resch Center. It was a struggle, but back to back five set wins got Chippewa Falls in this position.
#6 Kettle Moraine
On paper, Kettle Moraine has one of the weaker records. Shane Peterson led this team to a 19-9 season and a 7-1 record in the Classic Eight conference which was won by Oconomowoc. A disastrous 1-4 start to the season didn’t hold Kettle Moraine back from heading to their second straight state tournament. Two of their nine losses came to Oconomowoc, but their big looming loss was to Oconomowoc last year in the state semi-finals.
#7 Middleton
A two loss team draws the #7 seed? It’s all about strength of schedule. Middleton will head to Green Bay with a 27-2 record. One loss is against a Division 1 team barely above .500, and the second is to a Division 3 squad who lost in the Sectionals. While Middleton hasn’t lost since September 10th, they haven’t played a single team that has made it to the state tournament.
#8 Wauwatosa East
Even with a 16-15 record, Wauwatosa East drew a #1 seed and breezed their way through the playoffs. From September 3rd through 17th, this team lost 8 of their 15 games. Even a six game losing streak from September 27th to October 13th couldn’t hold this team back from punching their ticket to the Resch Center.
