Could Sean Payton Return To The NFL?
According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, the Denver Broncos have requested and received permission from the New Orleans Saints to interview former Saints coach and Super Bowl Champion, Sean Payton for their head coaching position.
“The Denver Broncos requested and received permission from the New Orleans Saints to interview Sean Payton for their head coach job, league sources tell ESPN. The NFL ruled that any in-person interview with Payton cannot be conducted until at least January 17, per sources.”
Sean Payton Career Breakdown
Sean Payton began his NFL coaching career in 1997, where he served as the Quarterback’s Coach for the Philadelphia Eagles for one season before being leaving to the New York Giants to serve in the same role. Payton would be elevated to the Giants’ Offensive Coordinator from 2000 until 2002, before departing for yet another NFC East team and joining the Dallas Cowboys, where he worked as the club’s Assistant Head Coach in addition to QB Coach. Payton would then famously be hired by the New Orleans Saints as the team’s Head Coach in 2006 and would lead the club to their first Super Bowl Championship in 2009. Payton would be suspended for the 2012 season due to the infamous bounty-gate scandal but he’d resume his duties as Head Coach in 2013 until stepping down before the 2022 season kicked off.
Could Sean Payton Replace A Former Green Bay Packers Coach?
As the Denver Broncos prepare for their final game of the regular season against the Los Angeles Chargers, tomorrow afternoon, the club already has an eye toward the future with the Payton news. The Broncos letting Hackett go certainly wasn’t a surprise as Denver compiled just a 4-12 record, this season, despite trading a massive haul of draft picks and players for now-former Seattle Seahawks Pro Bowl QB, Russell Wilson, this past off-season. Packers fans are obviously familiar with Hackett as he served as Green Bay’s Offensive Coordinator from 2019 through last season before he was hired as the Denver Broncos Head Coach.
