Due to a multitude of factors, Pedro Severino spent little time playing for the Brewers this season. After being acquired to serve as backup catcher, he was suspended for 80 games plus ruled ineligible for the 2022 postseason due to a positive drug test. The Brewers traded for Victor Caratini to fill the void. Caratini ultimately won the backup job for the rest of the season, even once Severino was activated.
Offensive Grade: D+
Though the sample size is pretty limited at just 18 Major League at bats, Severino was inefficient at the plate this season. He had almost twice as many strikeouts (7) as hits (4) and only one of those hits resulted in an RBI. Initially, he showed a lot of promise during spring training but never lived up to it once he returned from his suspension.
Defensive Grade: B
As little as we saw Severino at bat, we saw him on the field even less. A quarter of his eight games were as designated hitter. Due to the number of catchers the Brewers carried, he also played two games at first base. That leaves only half of his games with the Brewers at his true position, catcher. Severino was perfectly average but nothing flashy behind the plate. The combination of his average defense and lackluster bat led to the end of his short tenure with the Brewers and a one-way ticket to AAA Nashville.
Overall 2022 Season Grade: C-
Unfortunately, Severino wasn’t reliable enough on or off the field this season. Severino was designated for assignment by the Brewers mid-season, shortly after returning from his suspension. He finished the season in the Crew’s minor league system but elected free agency at the end of the season and has since signed with the San Diego Padres. The Brewers hope to see some improvement at catcher this year after gaining William Contreras in a three-way trade this offseason.
