Brewers: Raynaud’s Syndrome Preventing Brandon Woodruff’s Return

Brewers starting pitcher Brandon Woodruff has been on the IL over the past two weeks with a right ankle sprain.  The good news is that his ankle feels back to 100%.  However, he is experiencing raynaud’s syndrome, which is preventing him from returning off the IL.

Brewers All-Star Brandon Woodruff confirms he is experiencing symptoms of Raynaud’s syndrome, describing numbness and cold feeling in his middle three fingers. He will not come off the IL when eligible on Sunday. The ankle sprain that landed him there, however, is fully healed.

What is raynaud’s syndrome and why is it preventing Woodruff from returning?

Raynaud’s is a problem that causes decreased blood flow due to muscle spasms in the affected area.  The exact reason for why raynauds occurs is unknown, but it typically happens in response to cold, stress, or emotional upset.  For Brandon Woodruff, this is affecting his ability to grip a baseball and throw/spin certain pitches.

This setback is a grip issue for Woodruff, affecting his ability to spin his slider & curve, he said. He said there is no concrete timetable for his return, though his fingers have responded well to treatment.

He is scheduled to throw off a mound again tomorrow, he said. https://t.co/R5HbtDMqhi

Woodruff is currently receiving treatment and medication for the issue from the Brewers medical staff.  The exact timetable for when he will return is unknown.  He is eligible to return as early as Sunday June 12, but due to dealing with raynaud’s he will not be activated.

The Brewers are currently on a seven game losing streak, so receiving this news is a tough pill to swallow.  It does not make sense to have Woodruff return when his ability to throw two of his pitches is altered.  All we can do now is wait and hope this issue resolves quickly.
