Just as the Milwaukee Brewers head into the second half of the season, they gain back one of their outfielders in Tyrone Taylor.
Taylor had been on the injury list since last month after making a short comeback from an injury that made him miss the first month of the season. The outfielder had been having issues with his right elbow, and even after receiving cortisone shots, he just couldn’t shake it off.
Prior to his second trip to the IL, Taylor played in 27 games where he poorly slashed .160/.179/.240 with 21 strikeouts. Fans were less than impressed with his performance given the fact that his 2022 season was arguably his best in the major leagues.
What Does This Mean for Tyrone Taylor’s Role in the Outfield?
As far as the Brewers are concerned, the outfield is probably one of the biggest question marks in terms of who’s going to have that everyday role. Right now, it’s been mainly Christian Yelich, Joey Wiemer, and a split between Blake Perkins, Raimel Tapia and Brian Anderson, all of whom have been performing pretty well offensively.
Looking at where Tyrone fits into the picture, he’s really going to have to prove himself to really secure a spot on the roster and secure his spot in the outfield. So far, the injuries and poor offensive production haven’t been helping him be a dominant player.
Taylor recently completed a rehab assignment with the Nashville Sounds, the Brewers’ Triple-A Affiliate. He appeared in 12 games, where he slashed .245/.339/.571 with an OPS of .910, four home-runs, and 12 strikeouts. His numbers in Nashville have been way better compared to his first 27 games in the major leagues, so maybe this is a trend in the right direction. Let’s just hope he isn’t struck with more injuries or complications that can hinder his chances at a secured spot on the roster.
Tyrone Taylor is back in the lineup for Friday’s matchup against the Cincinnati Reds. He’ll bat eighth and play right field.
