Just a day after being crowned NL Central Division Champions, the Milwaukee Brewers duke it out for game two against the St. Louis Cardinals in a 3-2 victory on Wednesday. The lineup for Wednesday looked a little strange, as the crew decided to water it down a little and sit their normal starters.
The Brewers scored all three of their runs in the sixth, Tyrone Taylor had two run-scoring doubles, and Wade Miley allowed just one run over five innings of work in his last regular-season outing.
Wade Miley shines once again for the Brewers
These last couple of starts for the left-hander have been great. He threw 89 total pitches in five innings of work on Wednesday. He allowed six hits, three of which came in the second that allowed the Cardinals a 1-0 lead. But, Miley was able to get out of jams with a pair of double plays and struck out two.
The Cardinals were able to grab a 2-0 lead after an Abner Uribe walk, a pair of wild pitches, and a Brian Anderson error. St. Louis’ starter Zack Thompson nearly blanked the Brewers, allowing only three hits.
The star of the show: Tyrone Taylor
It wasn’t until the sixth inning that the Brewers were able to get the bats going. Both William Contreras and Tyrone Taylor hit back-to-back doubles to help get the Brewers on the board. Taylor was able to advance to third on a throwing error, and Rowdy Tellez drove him home after Cards catcher Ivan Herrera decided to try and throw Rowdy out at first instead of tagging Taylor at home.
Milwaukee was able to take the lead in the seventh inning with a lead-off double by Anderson, and then Tyrone Taylor once again hit a two-out, run-scoring double.
Taylor continues to show how spectacular he’s been in September with his consistent at-bats and ability to score some runs. In his last 30 games, he’s hit five home runs, stolen three bags, and is slashing .277/.327/.564.
Bullpen saves the day…Again
The Brewers’ bullpen time and time again has proven to be one of the best, if not the best in baseball. Joel Payamps got the win on Wednesday, while Andrew Chafin and closer Devin Williams were able to follow Uribe with scoreless innings and Williams was able to capture save no. 36.
Injury Updates
Right-hander JB Bukauskas was placed on the injured list with a finger injury, and the Brewers recalled Ethan Small from Triple-A Nashville in response.
Garrett Mitchell (shoulder) and Jesse Winker (right quad) are both back in Milwaukee to continue their rehab assignments. Mitchell is nearing that return, but he hasn’t been cleared to return just yet. Both of them have been taking live batting practices this week, respectively.
Up Next:
The Milwaukee Brewers improved their record to 89-69, just one shy of their ninth 90-victory season. They will face the Cardinals one last time this season tomorrow afternoon with a 3:15 PM CST start time. Corbin Burnes will be on the mound for his last regular-season start for the crew, and Dakota Hudson will take the bump for St. Louis.
