Brewers sign Josh VanMeter to a 2023 Minor League Contract
VanMeter is a 27 year old infielder who bats from the left side and throws with his right hand. Last year, most of his defensive appearances came at second base, but he also played quite a bit of first base as well. On a few occasions he played third base and a corner outfield position.
At the plate, he has not yet established himself in the big leagues. Since 2019, he has spent time in the Reds, Diamondbacks, and Pirates organizations. He’s accrued three years of service time over that span, but has a career batting average of .206, an on-base percentage below .300, and a career .347 slugging percentage.
Over his career, VanMeter has been one player who has been shifted on a bunch. In 2022, opposing teams shifted on him 79.7% of the time. Perhaps the rule changes coming in 2023 will help him offensively, otherwise his defensively versatility looks like his biggest asset right now.
