On July 14th in San Francisco, Corbin Burnes was the winning pitcher in the Brewers’ 3-2 win over the Giants. Burnes had 10 strikeouts in the contest, the 19th career game with 10 or more strikeouts. That broke the Brewers career record of 18 held by Yovani Gallardo.
Almost two months later, Burnes, again facing the Giants but this time in Milwaukee, was the winning pitcher in the Brewers’ 2-1 win over San Francisco. Burnes had 14 strikeouts in the game, the ninth time in 2022 that he had 10+ strikeouts in a game. That tied the team record for most 10+ strikeout games in a season. That tied him with Ben Sheets who set the record in 2004.

Burnes and fellow Brewers starters Brandon Woodruff, Eric Lauer, Freddy Peralta and Aaron Ashby combined for 20 games in 2022 where they had 10 or more strikeouts, most in baseball last season. Burnes had nine, Woodruff seven, Lauer had two, and Peralta and Ashby each had one game with 10+ strikeouts.

Breaking the MLB record for these two stats, however, might be a little harder for Burnes. There has been eight times in the majors that a pitcher has struck out 10 or more batters in 20 or more games in a season. Randy Johnson holds four of those eight seasons. They are:

The career record for most 10-strikeout games was a two-man race between Randy Johnson and Nolan Ryan. Ryan tops the list with 215 career games with 10 or more strikeouts, Johnson ended his career just three games short of Ryan with 212. Only three other MLB pitchers have 100 or more career games with 10 or more strikeouts… Roger Clemens (110), Max Scherzer (110), and Pedro Martinez (108).
