Breaking: Packers Sign Free Agent Tight End

The Green Bay Packers worked out four players this past week.  The one that got the most publicity was wide receiver John Brown, however that is not the one the Packers decided to sign.  Green Bay will officially have a 90 man roster entering training camp after they signed tight end Sal Cannella.

    Who is Sal Cannella?

The 6‘5“ 230 pound tight end was ranked the number one tight end in the USFL. He finished the season with 34 receptions for 368 yards, and two touchdowns.  Cannella played at the University of Auburn from 2017 to 2019.

A native of Schaumburg, Ill., Cannella was the No. 1-ranked tight end coming out of Scottsdale (Ariz.) Community College in 2016. At Auburn, he played tight end in 2017, tight end and receiver in 2018 and receiver in 2019, when he caught 10 passes for 188 yards and two touchdowns.

Cannella joins and interesting position group:

Robert Tonyan is Green Bay’s presumed number one tight end going into the season.  However we are still unaware of his week one status. Marcedes Lewis will maintain his blocking / snap count role, Josiah Deguara is still a huge question mark, and we have yet to see much out of Tyler Davis (even though the Packers front office seems to think highly of him).  Cannella will certainly have opportunities to make the team, especially if he shines on special teams as well.
