Aaron Jones and the Green Bay Packers season ended un-ceremoniously on Sunday night. After losing 20-16 to the Lions at Lambeau Field the Packers’ improbable playoff run was ended. Instead, it will be the Seattle Seahawks heading to San Francisco to play the 49ers in the wild-card round next weekend. There has been much speculation regarding the future of Aaron Jones in Green Bay after the 2022 season. Jones was asked about his future in Green Bay and gave a telling response.
Aaron Jones Wants To Be Back In Green Bay, Unsure If It’ll Happen
Per Ryan Wood of USA Today:
Aaron Jones don’t know what his future with Packers will be, but he knows what he wants it to be: “I’d love to be here, so hopefully they feel the same way about me.”On the fumble Vs the Lions, Aaron Jones said he was trying to make a play. Got vertical, used stiff arm to break tackle from left. “I know I probably should’ve had the ball in that arm,” he said. Jones said football needed to be “high and tight” but wasn’t. Jones never saw DL coming from right.Aaron Jones had a career-high 5 fumbles this year. Lost 2 fumbles in last 4 games. He knows what to improve in offseason: “Can’t have that. It’s tough. But I’ll be better next year, better ball security. All around, not just ball security. My mechanics will be better next year.”
In 2024, Aaron Jones’ cap hit is about $16 million. His dead cap hit is just $5.5 million. Again, cutting him prior to the 2023 season would save over $10 million. Of course, the Packers could work out a contract restructure with Jones to keep him around longer. However, as he gets older, this possibility becomes less and less likely. How well he produced in 2022 will certainly play a role in determining his future in Green Bay. Aaron Jones set personal best for rushing yards in 2022. He finished the season with averaging 5.3 yards per carry, 1,121 rushing yards, two rushing touchdowns, 395 receiving yards, and five receiving touchdowns.
