The #8 Marquette Golden Eagles were honoring seniors Tyler Kolek and Oso Ighodaro before the game against #2 UCONN Huskies on Wednesday night. One that couldn’t happen is Marquette getting embarrassed against UCONN again. The Golden Eagles went on a run late in the second half, but it fell short against the Huskies and lost by a final score of 74-67.
There were points in the first half where the Marquette Golden Eagles looked overmatched against the UCONN Huskies. Marquette outscored UCONN by four points in the second half. They hope they can get another crack at them in the Big East Championship Game.
With the loss for Marquette, they now have an identical record with the #10 Creighton Blue Jays at 22-8 overall and a 13-6 record in Big East Conference play. Kam Jones once again led the Golden Eagles in scoring with 18 points. He also grabbed three rebounds and recorded two assists.
Oso Ighodaro missed his last matchup due to an illness. He scored 16 points, grabbed eight rebounds, and recorded two assists. David Joplin also added 10 points for Marquette. Tyler Kolek was sidelined once again due to an oblique injury.
Oso Ighodaro told Ben Steele of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel after the game about how he wants to be remembered by telling him:
“Our goal for the season was to win a national championship. We still haven’t done that, and that’s what I want my legacy to be.”
The Golden Eagles still have time to win it all this season. March Madness will not begin for another couple of weeks for Shaka Smart’s squad.
#2 UCONN Huskies Have Three Players Score in Double Figures Against the #8 Marquette Golden Eagles
The Huskies are a very deep basketball team and this win puts them maybe a step closer to the number one overall seed. Dan Hurley’s squad improves to 27-3 overall on the year and 17-2 in Big East Conference play. Alex Karaban led the way with 23 points, five rebounds, and three assists.
Cam Spencer scored 17 points, grabbed eight rebounds, and recorded eight assists. Spencer was a problem for the Marquette Golden Eagles to deal with all night long. Tristen Newton also added 10 points for the Huskies.
UCONN sweeps the season series from Marquette. It would not be surprising to see these two college basketball teams meet each other again in the Big East Tournament. With the UCONN Huskies already clinching the regular season title, they are tuning up for the postseason.
