The #8 Marquette Golden Eagles will host the #2 UCONN Huskies on Senior Night with tipoff scheduled for 7:30 p.m. CT. This college basketball game will be televised on FS1. Heading into this matchup, Marquette has a 22-7 overall record and they have a 13-5 record in Big East Conference play.
As for UCONN, they have already wrapped up the number one seed in the Big East Conference. This game technically means nothing to the Huskies unless they are trying to catch the number one overall seed in the NCAA Tournament.
The Huskies have a 26-3 overall record this season and a 16-2 record in Big East Conference play this season. They are trying to get tuned up to win the National Title for the second straight season. That feat has not been accomplished since the Florida Gators did it in 2006 and 2007.
Entering this matchup, the Marquette Golden Eagles are currently the second seed in the Big East and they are trying to hold off the #10 Creighton Blue Jays for that spot. In reality, it may not matter because it appears as if they are going to meet in the Big East Conference Semifinals anyway.
In the last matchup for the Golden Eagles, they lost to the Creighton Blue Jays this past Saturday by a final score of 89-75. Kam Jones once again led Marquette in scoring with 23 points. He also grabbed one rebound and recorded three assists.
David Joplin stepped up and scored 21 points and grabbed five rebounds for the Marquette Golden Eagles. Stevie Mitchell was the other scorer in double digits for Marquette against Creighton with 15 points.
Tyler Kolek was sidelined due to an oblique injury and head coach Shaka Smart mentioned that he will miss the final two games of the regular season, but he can very well be back for the Big East Tournament on March 14. Oso Ighodaro also missed Saturday’s contest due to an illness, but he is expected to play on Wednesday night against UCONN.
#2 UCONN Huskies Players To Watch For Against #8 Marquette Golden Eagles
UCONN has one of the best rosters in college basketball this season under head coach Dan Hurley. They last played on Sunday at home against the Seton Hall Pirates and won that game easily by a final score of 91-61. Four players scored in double figures for the Huskies in that matchup.
Stephon Castle is the best player on UCONN and he led the way with 21 points, four rebounds, and three assists. Donovan Clingan recorded another double-double for the Huskies with 19 points and 11 rebounds, along with two assists. Alex Karaban scored 13 points and Tristen Newton also added 17 points, four rebounds, and 10 assists.
In the last meeting between the Marquette Golden Eagles and UCONN Huskies on February 17, Marquette was embarrassed against UCONN when the Huskies won that matchup 81-53. The Golden Eagles being without Tyler Kolek on Wednesday night is already a tall task against this team.
They need to make it competitive. It can’t be another blowout win for the Huskies on senior night. As long as they keep the game within 10 points, it won’t be horrendous for the Golden Eagles.
