The Green Bay Packers figure to be one of the contenders coming out of the NFC in 2024. The second half of the 2023 season saw Green Bay take a serious step forward on offense. Jordan Love and the Packers’ offense started firing on all cylinders and were performing as good as anyone in the league.
In fact, the Packers went 7-3 in their final 10 games, including a dominant win over the Dallas Cowboys in the Wild Card round of the playoffs.
Now reports are surfacing that Green Bay stole away a dynamic weapon from an NFC Rival.
The Green Bay Packers Steal Offensive Weapon Away From The New York Giants
According to Doric Sam of Bleacher Report:
Before being selected by the Green Bay Packers in the third round of the 2024 NFL draft, rookie running back MarShawn Lloyd reportedly was coveted by a pair of NFC East teams.
Per ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler, the Dallas Cowboys “had shown enough pre-draft love” to Lloyd that the former USC speedster “thought the Cowboys would be one of the possible teams to draft him.” Also, the New York Giants “had [their] sights on” Lloyd “as a future lead back but didn’t have a pick between Nos. 71 and 107.” The Packers ended up selecting him at No. 88.
After transferring from South Carolina to USC for the 2023 season, Lloyd racked up 820 yards and nine touchdowns on 116 carries while also adding 13 receptions for 232 yards, averaging 17.8 yards per catch.
The Packers May Have Got Something Very Special In MarShawn Lloyd
Among the Packers’ backfield leaders is two-time Pro Bowler Josh Jacobs, who spent his first five seasons with the Raiders. Additionally, the Packers resigned backup AJ Dillon, who had been set to become a free agent.
After losing out on Lloyd, the Cowboys passed on drafting a running back with any of their eight selections. In the fifth round, the Giants selected Purdue running back Tyrone Tracy Jr.
Lloyd has been regarded as the best running back in the draft by multiple analysts. It will be interesting to see what kind of role he can carve out for himself in year one. From the sounds of it, the Packers want to get him on the field as early and often as possible.
