The Wisconsin Badgers women’s hockey team has advanced to the NCAA Championship game after a narrow 3-2 overtime victory against the Minnesota Golden Gophers. Ohio State defeated Northeastern 3-0 as well to advance to the title game and face-off against the Badgers once again this season. The Buckeyes have been the top school in the country this season, but the Badgers hope to win when it matters most.
Wisconsin Badgers Women’s Hockey Wins 3-2 in OT, Advances
The Wisconsin Badgers are about to play in all four rounds of the 2023 NCAA women’s Frozen Four, making an incredible run. The Badgers opened their post-season play in the first round against Long Island University and skated away with a dominant 9-1 victory in a clear mismatch. Wisconsin took the momentum from their massive win and converted it into more success. The Badgers have since beaten #3 Colgate 4-2 and #2 Minnesota 3-2.
Wisconsin opened their game against the Golden Gophers off by allowing a goal within the first four minutes of regulation. The Badgers and Golden Gophers battled for over two straight periods without seeing another goal until deep into the third period. Wisconsin was finally able to get their response when Laila Edwards cleaned up the puck from Jesse Compher to even the score at one.
Less than a minute went by before the Badgers tacked on another goal when Sophie Shirley lit the buzzer up, giving Maddi Wheeler the assist. Wisconsin continued to fight for the rest of the third period, trying to hold off the Minnesota attacks to keep a lead. However, Minnesota managed to net a goal with a minute left in regulation to tie the score at two.

The Wisconsin Badgers women’s hockey team continued to fight into overtime as the score stayed even. The Wisconsin Badgers needed nearly 17 minutes of overtime before Caroline Harvey found the back of the net on assists by Jesse Compher and Britta Curl. Wisconsin goalkeeper Cami Kronish saved 37 shots as she got her 20th win of the season.
Can the Wisconsin Badgers Beat the Ohio State Buckeyes?
The Wisconsin Badgers will have their toughest test of the year against a familiar team. Wisconsin has faced Ohio State already this year but has only had success in one match up. The majority of the meetings between the two teams have been pretty one sided in the Buckeyes favor. However, the Wisconsin team will certainly not let the rank of their opponent intimidate them.
Wisconsin has gone up against higher ranked opponents in both of their previous games and skated off with victories in both. Despite their tough record against the Ohio State Buckeyes, this Wisconsin unit should be excited and determined to take down their biggest rival from this season especially. The Badgers have had plenty of success as a program this year and now sit three periods away from potentially bringing home a seventh national title.
