The Wisconsin Badgers football team may have struggled this past season, but one player had a particularly dominant season defensively.
Hunter Wohler led the Wisconsin football team in tackles this past season and played excellently through the air as he earned a spot on the PFF Highest Graded safeties list. Wohler appeared out of nowhere this past season for the Badgers and crushed opposing offenses with his field vision and lethal hits. At one point, it seemed as though the safety was likely heading to the NFL Draft, but now the captain is returning to his squad.
Wisconsin Badgers’ Hunter Wohler Comes in at Third in Final 2023 PFF Positional Rankings
In the final PFF rankings of the season, the Wisconsin football leader Hunter Wohler finished in the third spot in the rankings. Wohler sat behind Minnesota safety Tyler Nubin (89.9) and Purdue safety Dillon Thieneman (89.8) with a score of 89.3.
Wohler recorded 120 total tackles, two interceptions, and one sack this past season while adding six pass defenses. The defensive leader for the Badgers established himself as a dominant play-maker and a versatile athlete in the open field. Wohler can make an offense pay in multiple different ways, which makes him such a difficult player to avoid.
While Wohler had an exceptional season, the Wisconsin football team certainly did not as they finished with a 7-5 record. The Badgers lost a close game against the LSU Tigers to end Bowl Season, which officially opened the flood gates of the transfer portal. Many worried Wohler would transfer or enter the NFL Draft after taking a leave from the team, but now Wohler is back with the Badgers.
Back for a Final Run: What to Expect from Hunter Wohler in His Senior Season
At one point in time, it seemed like Wohler would surely leave the Badgers for the NFL, or even a top-level program. However, the talented leader returned right as the Badgers began landing high-level players like linebacker Tackett Curtis and quarterback Tyler Van Dyke.
With the return of Wohler surely happening, the Wisconsin Badgers defense can truly be a nightmare to play against in the 2024 season. Wohler has the potential to replicate his numbers from a year ago, but with the players that have been added expect the safety to make more plays for the Badgers next season.
Where will the Wisconsin Football Safety Land Follow the 2024 Season?
While it was a possibility that Wohler would enter the NFL, it turned out to be a decision the safety was not ready to make. However, when Wohler does enter the draft, it surely seems as though the safety will be a lock for the first round. If Wohler is able to replicate his production from this season during the 2024 season, the Badger defender will likely be a top-20 pick.
