The Green Bay Packers may have done it yet again. Jordan Love appears to have what it takes to be the franchise’s third consecutive franchise quarterback. The 25-year-old quarterback got his first opportunity to start in 2023 and by season’s end, he did not disappoint.
He finished with more than 4,000 passing yards, 36 total touchdowns (32 through the air, 4 on the ground), 11 interceptions, and just three points shy of appearing in the NFC Championship game.
While the young offense seems to have most of its pieces in place, they could look to be adding one more dynamic weapon.
The Green Bay Packers Meet With Electric Wide Receiver Prior To The 2024 NFL Draft
One of the NFL’s youngest, deepest and best wide receiver corps belong to the Green Bay Packers. Receiver would be among the lowest-ranked NFL Draft needs for the team.
Still, the Packers are always looking for ways to improve. Xavier Legette of South Carolina was invited to the team for a pre-draft visit, according to Justin Melo of The Draft Network.
Who Is Xavier Legette And What Would He Bring To The Packers?
Legette is comparable to fellow former Gamecock Deebo Samuel in his stocky build at 6’1 and 221 pounds. At the NFL Combine, he ran a 4.39 40-yard dash, added a 40-inch vertical jump, and jumped 10’6 in the broad jump. He has the potential to be an absolute game changer in this league.
His draft profile is as follows:
Xavier Legette was a late bloomer in college, but one with an NFL-ready frame and ball skills. He lined up all over the field for South Carolina, though he was primarily an outside receiver with vertical responsibilities.
While Legette lacks quickness and refinement at the line of scrimmage, he makes up for it with his long speed. He has enough juice to consistently threaten down the field on go routes, posts and deep crossing routes once he starts striding out. He is also a bully-style yards-after-the-catch player thanks to his ample speed and strong build.
More importantly, Legette is a devastating contested-catch player. His massive frame and excellent hand-eye coordination make it easy for him to high-point the ball. Legette is also an effortless and flexible mover in the air, which allows him to contort his body as needed to get the ball.
Many of Legette’s pain points come down to refinement. He is not skilled at battling at the line of scrimmage, nor is he a developed route-runner who can mix up his approach to keep defensive backs guessing. He plays with a fairly straightforward approach.
Additionally, Legette can struggle to work back to the ball and make himself friendly to the quarterback. That shows up most on timing routes or when Legette is running across the field and needs to attack the ball so defensive backs don’t undercut the route.
Legette is an intriguing prospect with size, adequate speed and ball skills. The concern is that Legette is not a dynamic mover, and he is still a work in progress when it comes to the finer parts of the position. Legette would be best in a play-action heavy system that enables his vertical ability and ball skills.
Legette is widely projected to go anywhere from late first round to late second round pick. It will be genuinely interesting to see where he lands. The Packers having three picks in the first two rounds gives them plenty of fire power to go get him if they want to bolster the offense even more.
