The Wisconsin Badgers basketball team has officially been excluded from the preseason rankings after the Associated Press released their initial list.
Following a tough season a year ago that saw the Badgers miss the coveted NCAA Tournament, the Badgers have now missed out on a spot in the rankings. Wisconsin is set to have quite an interesting schedule this upcoming season. With the amount of talent the Badgers have, Wisconsin could find themselves among the top teams with crucial wins.
Wisconsin Badgers Basketball Narrowly Misses Out on Position In Top 25
Wisconsin was excluded from the first edition of rankings released by the Associated Press ahead of the season. The Wisconsin Badgers received 53 votes for a spot in the rankings, which proves that the team certainly has the talent to compete. However, the Badgers were selected as the first team out, causing the team to miss out on a coveted spot.
The Wisconsin Badgers basketball team has started the season unranked seven times in the past 15 years. Five of those seven times, the Badgers finished the season ranked and made the NCAA Tournament, besides the 2019-20 season. The Badgers and the NCAA had canceled the season before the tournament could play out while Wisconsin was ranked 24th.
Canceled season or not, the Wisconsin Badgers basketball team seems to play better when they are initially doubted. That is not to say that the Associated Press does not believe the Badgers are talented, but the media everywhere is still hesitant to rank the team.
Will the Wisconsin Badgers Basketball Team Bounce Back After a Tumultuous 2022-23 Season?
While Wisconsin may not have found a spot in the initial rankings, that does not mean the team is not capable. The Wisconsin Badgers are set to return 90% of their production on the court from a season ago. Along with this, the Badgers have also added the stud transfer AJ Storr from the St. John’s Red Storm. On paper, Wisconsin has more than enough production to win.
The Badgers certainly have the talent to propel themselves into the rankings, but what truly can move the team forward is their difficult schedule. The Badgers will take on (9) Tennessee, Providence, (5) Marquette, (4) Michigan State, and (12) Arizona is the first few weeks of the season. Marquette, Michigan State, and Arizona will be back-to-back-to-back games for the Wisconsin Badgers.
Wisconsin is going to play against a total of six teams that have been ranked ahead of the season. No matter how much talent a team has, that is certainly quite the gauntlet to go through. The Wisconsin Badgers will have plenty of tests to prove themselves to both the fans and the media.
The true question for the Badgers heading into the season is not where the team could be ranked but rather where the team will end up. The 2022-23 season started with plenty of hopes before the Badgers struggled to play like themselves for the entire game. Now, Wisconsin hopes to reach its true potential during the 2023-24 season.
