The Packers may have something special on their hands in young QB Jordan Love.
After coming in for an injured Aaron Rodgers in the second half of Green Bay’s game against the Eagles, Love managed to put together an excellent stat line. He completed 6 of 9 passes for 113 yards and a touchdown, good for a 146.8 passer rating. Although it was a limited sample size, Love impressed many – including one of his opponents.
Darius Slay has spent 10 years in the NFL. He has attained multiple Pro Bowls and a first-team All-Pro spot. Starting for the Eagles this year, he has recorded 3 interceptions and 10 passes defensed as a key part of a very good defense. He has played against some of the best quarterbacks in the game. Slay spent 7 years in Detroit, competing against Rodgers twice a year. He knows what good QB play is. That’s what makes his comments so remarkable.
What Exactly Did Slay Say?
Slay discussed some notable aspects of the game against the Packers in his podcast with The Volume. About seven minutes in, he began talking about his reaction to Rodgers’ injury-forced exit. He related how the defense initially anticipated a chance to rack up some sacks and stops against the backup QB. However, Love proved that he could play well, even against a defense smelling blood in the water. In Slay’s words, “Green Bay got a bright, bright future . . . cuz [Love] was slinging it.”
Slay didn’t stop there, commenting that Love’s play reminded him of Rodgers himself. Slay clearly thinks that Love is a starting QB in the NFL, stating that “his time gonna come, and you can see, like, the gun-slinging mentality he has.”
Conclusion
It’s no small matter that Love is drawing this type of praise from an elite defender in the NFL. Slay is an opponent, who has no incentive to go out of his way to compliment Love. Despite this, he made a point to single out his high opinion of the young QB. Coming just a few weeks after similarly unprompted comments from De’Vondre Campbell, Slay’s words seem to reflect an upwards trajectory for Jordan Love’s nascent career.
