As the MLB takes a break for the 2023 All-Star events, it’s enjoyable to reminisce. Let’s look back at when Prince Fielder won the Home Run Derby championship in 2009.
A Look Back at Prince Fielder’s 2009 Remarkable Home Run Derby
Prince Fielder Proves He Is A Slugger
Did you know that on July 13, 2009, Fielder made history by becoming the first Milwaukee Brewers player to win the MLB Home Run Derby? Interestingly, he used Rickie Weeks‘ bat and later Ryan Braun‘s bat to clinch the title. Other notable players in the derby were Albert Pujols, Ryan Howard, and Nelson Cruz, but Fielder proved to be the most consistent. He even hit a jaw-dropping 503-foot bomb that left fans in awe. The cherry on top? He did it all at rival Busch Stadium and beat fan favorite Albert Pujols.
Fielder’s Legacy in Milwaukee
In 2009, Fielder’s impressive performance at the Derby established him as one of the top sluggers of the 2010s. Throughout his career, he hit 230 home runs for the Brewers, placing him third on their all-time list behind Robin Young (251) and Ryan Braun (352). Fielder later played for the Detroit Tigers, where he won the 2012 HR Derby, before retiring due to a neck injury while with the Texas Rangers. Fielder earned six All-Star appearances, three Silver Sluggers, the 2007 Home Run Leader title, and was honored with a spot on the American Family Field Walk of Fame and the Milwaukee Brewers Wall of Honor.
