The Green Bay Packers may have some big decisions to make in 2023. One of those decisions could be moving on from QB Aaron Rodgers. If that is the case, there figures to be plenty of teams lining up to offer a package for the 4-Time MVP QB. One AFC team that is currently in contention for a playoff spot may be interested in trading for Aaron Rodgers. The New York Jets head coach Robert Saleh made a statement today regarding the starting QB position. “We’re keeping everything on the table over the next couple of days,” Saleh said regarding the starting QB this Sunday. This prompted many reporters to look to the 2023 season. Could Aaron Rodgers follow suit with Brett Favre and play for the Jets?
Could Aaron Rodgers Be Traded To The New York Jets?
Robert Zeglinski of USA Today named the Jets as an ideal landing spot for Aaron Rodgers during the 2023 off-season. This was his reasoning:
We are now in a place where it’s fair to consider the Packers will pull out all the possible stops to try and escape Aaron Rodgers’ enormous contract that lasts until 2026. As the former MVP shows clear signs of regression toward the end of his career, there is no feasible way Green Bay will enjoy seeing his cap hit rise to as much as $59 million within two seasons.
The article later went on to say:
I would not be shocked to see New York GM Joe Douglas come desperately dialing the Packers’ front office to see what’s up with Rodgers come 2023. He would be silly not to. If a creative trade for Rodgers costs mortgaging much of the Jets’ future, so be it. Douglas meticulously constructed a solid team in all three phases for over three years. Letting Zach Wilson torpedo that effort without getting bold and aggressive with solutions would be malpractice. Douglas is obligated to see him and his colleagues’ work through and squeeze out as much as possible in the form of hopeful playoff berths and playoff victories and (potentially) more.
So What Would A Trade Like This Look Like?
There would certainly have to be some salary cap hoops to jump through with Aaron Rodgers’ contract, but more than doable. If this trade happened before June 1st, 2023, the Packers would have a $40M cap hit in 2023. However, if it happened after June 1st, 2023, they would have a $15M cap hit in 2023 and a $24M cap hit in 2024. A trade like this could set Green Bay up for the next phase of their franchise while giving the Jets a chance to win now. Green Bay currently sits at 4-7 eleven weeks into the 2022 NFL season. If their season ends just as rough as it has begun, a trade could be imminent. This is our proposed trade for Aaron Rodgers to the New York Jets.
