Packers’ rookie receiving trio #1 in touchdowns in 2022

With five TD receptions in his last two games, Green Bay rookie receiver Christian Watson has vaulted to the top of the list for most TD receptions by a rookie in 2022 with five. Washington’s rookie receiver Jahan Dotson is second with four TD receptions.

Watson’s five TD catches has also pushed the Packers’ rookie receiving corps to the top of the most TD receptions by a team’s rookies this season. With Romeo Doubs’ three TD catches and Samori Toure’s one added to Watson’s five, the Packers have nine TD catches by rookies this season, most in the NFL.

The NFL teams with the most touchdown receptions by their rookie receivers this season.

    9-Green Bay (Doubs, Toure, Watson)

    4-Atlanta (Allgeier, London)
    4-Indianapolis (Pierce, Woods)
    4-Washington (Dotson)

    3-Dallas (Ferguson, Hendershot)
    3-New Orleans (Olave, Shaheed)
    3-New York Giants (Bellinger, Robinson)
    3-New York Jets (Hall, Wilson)

Nine TD receptions by the Packers’ rookie trio this year is already in the Top 4 for most TD catches by rookies in Green Bay history. The top three spots are taken by rookie Packers’ receivers in the early 1950’s. The nine TD catches by this year’s rookies is the most since the 1954 trio of Max McGee (9), Veryl Switzer (2) and Joe Johnson (1) had 12 that year.

The most rookie TD receptions by the team is also the most by a single player. In 1952, rookie Billy Howton, a second-round draft choice (15th overall pick) of the Packers in the ’52 draft from Rice, had 13 TD receptions in his first year in the NFL for Green Bay.

Here are the 10 seasons in Green Bay history when rookies had the most TD receptions.

    13-1952 Packers (Howton)
    12-1954 Packers (McGee, Johnson, Switzer)
10-1951 Packers (Carl Elliott, Ray Pelfrey)
    9-2022 Packers (Doubs, Toure, Watson)
    6-1935 Packers (Don Hutson)
    6-1978 Packers (James Lofton)
6-1987 Packers (Frankie Neal, Lee Morris, Keith Paskett, Lavale Thomas)
5-1931 Packers (Frank Baker, Hank Bruder, Milt Gantenbein, Roger Grove)
5-1984 Packers (Ed West, Ray Crouse)
5-2014 Packers (Davante Adams, Richard Rogers)

    Two final notes

    • The 2022 Green Bay Packers are the 93rd team in the Super Bowl era to have three rookies with at least one TD reception in a season.
    • Packers rookies rank second in receptions this season with 53 (Doubs-31, Watson-18, Toure-4). Topping this category are the New York Jets rookies with 61 catches. Garrett Wilson has 42 catches, fellow rookie Breece Hall has 19 receptions.
