Packers news: There was a lot of attention on Jordan Love in his first preseason game as the Green Bay Packers’ new star quarterback. While there was a ton to be excited about following Love’s debut, Green Bay’s rookie QB Sean Clifford also put in a noteworthy performance that has garnered all sorts of buzz.
Packers Rookie QB Sean Clifford on Roller-Coaster Debut: ‘That’s How I Play’

“Roller-coaster” is perhaps the best way to describe Clifford’s first preseason game in a Packers uniform. The former Penn State standout went 20-of-26 on his passing on Friday in a 36-19 win over the Cincinnati Bengals. Apart from throwing a touchdown pass to Tyler Davis, Clifford also logged an eye-opening 192 yards in the first half alone.
The young quarterback, however, also ended up throwing two interceptions, including a pick-six. It was an up-and-down debut for Green Bay’s fifth-round pick, to say the least. However, Clifford remained unfazed:
“That’s kind of how I play,” Clifford said, via Bill Huber of Packer Central. “Sometimes I’m unconventional. Sometimes I’m a little risky, which I need to improve on, but all together, I do like to go out there and make plays and have fun with my teammates.”
As a quarterback, you will need a lot of skill and talent in order to succeed at the highest level. However, perhaps equally important is confidence. This is clearly one department Sean Clifford excels in.
Packers News: Sean Clifford Isn’t Taking Anything for Granted

Don’t mistake Clifford’s self-assured attitude for arrogance, though. The 25-year-old is well aware of his errors against the Bengals. However, he isn’t letting these bring him down one bit:
“I definitely have made a mistake or two in my life and I’m not afraid to make another one,” said Clifford. “I trust the guys around me and I trust my teammates. Wicks was open. I’m not going to shy away just because the last play didn’t go our way. It’s a one-play mentality.”
All in all, it was a great debut from the Barrington, Illinois native. Clifford, of all people, knows what he needs to do, though. He’s not taking anything for granted at this point.
“We had a touchdown. We had a pick-six. We had another pick. It was a little bit of everything,” Clifford said. “Lots to learn from. A lot of good, a lot of bad. To be able to take this and really run with it and say, ‘All right how can I improve? How can I continue to grow?’ They make those plays fast. The NFL is a quick league, especially on defense.”
The QB position remains to be one of, if not the most important position for the Packers this coming season. It looks like Jordan Love is in line for a big year. Nevertheless, it’s good to know that he has an able backup sitting right behind him.
