Jaire Alexander signed a four-year $84 million contract extension with the Green Bay Packers earlier this year. Thankfully, Alexander has been relatively healthy all year and has made an impact on the defense. Unfortunately, however, there have been times in which he has struggled, as is the case with the entire Packers team this year. In a recent interview with Tom Silverstein of Packers News, Alexander discussed his approach to the season going forward.
Big Plays Have Gotten the Better of Jaire Alexander This Year
In years past, Alexander has been one of the best lockdown cornerbacks in the NFL. While this remains the case, he has been more susceptible to giving up big plays this year. Per Silverstein, “He’s responsible for 3½ plays of 40 or more yards, four of 20 or more yards and 3½ touchdowns in 13 games.”
When Silverstein asked Alexander what he learned after getting beat twice in the Bears’ game, Alexander said: “In our life, we don’t have control. It’s all about what God has for us, you know? So, it ain’t up to me. You got to ask God about that one.”
When asked what his takeaways from the Bears game were, Alexander said: “What I took from that game was I got an interception and we got the win.”
Jaire Alexander Has Been Better Than He Gets Credit For
The Green Bay Packers defense, as a whole, has been greatly disappointing this year. I think that, for this reason, certain players that are actually have decent seasons are getting some unnecessary criticism. Furthermore, I believe Jaire Alexander is one of those players.
Now, I am not saying that he didn’t deserve criticism for giving up two big plays against the Chicago Bears. He did. However, as he pointed out, he also got an interception and help win the game. As whole, Alexander’s season is stacking up to be one of his best statistical seasons in his career.
- Four interceptions (career high)
- 67.9 passer rating when targeted (second-best in his career)
- 12.5 yards per completion (second-best in career)
- 7.5 yards per target (second-best in career)
- 5.9% missed tackle percentage (lowest of career)
- 12 passes defended (third-best in career with four games to play)
Yes, the big plays have been a problem this season. However, let’s not make the mistake of putting it all on Alexander or assuming he has started to fall off. The Packers’ pass rush has been abysmal since Rashan Gary went down, making it very difficult on the defensive backs to stick in coverage. There is a great deal that needs fixing on the defense, but Alexander is not one of them.
