The Green Bay Packers have quite the tall order in front of them. They need to clear tens of millions of dollars in cap space before the start of the new league year on March 16. Some players have already had their contracts restructured. Still others may get extensions or be cut from the team altogether. However, one player that is almost certainly going to be extended is Jaire Alexander, as Aaron Nagler of CheeseheadTV reported.

Reps for Jaire Alexander met with the Packers yesterday to talk extension per an honest to goodness source. Nothing imminent, but decent chance something gets done prior to the start of free agency.

What Would a Jaire Alexander Contract Extension Look Like?

Jaire Alexander is a one-time Pro Bowl player who was also a Second Team All-Pro in 2020. Alexander is widely considered to be one of the best, if not THE best, cornerbacks in the NFL. The Packers are already on the hook for $13 million for him in 2022. This amount came from the team exercising his fifth year option. Without a doubt, he will make more money per season in any extension.

The highest paid cornerback in the NFL is Jalen Ramsey. Ramsey makes $20 million per season, and Baltimore’s Marlon Humphrey makes $19.5 million per season. It is very likely, and expected by some, that Alexander will become the highest paid cornerback in the NFL once his extension is signed.

A contract for four years and $84 million is certainly a possibility, though any contract numbers at this point are purely speculative. Additionally, how the contract looks in terms of base pay, signing bonuses, and other cap-saving moves is not clear at this point. Void years could also be used to make the contract more affordable for the Packers in the short term.

Whatever the team and Alexander agree to will be a win for the organization as a whole. Alexander is a generational talent at cornerback and should be kept at all costs.
