An Aaron Rodgers-less New York Jets still managed to scrape out a win on Monday in tremendous fashion. Their Week 1 showdown against the Buffalo Bills required an extra period, wherein the Jets ended up stunning their opponents with a punt return touchdown in overtime. New York prevailed after a tough matchup, 22-16.
That’s all the good news New York fans can expect, though. As it turns out, the update on Rodgers’ injury could be devastating.
New York Jets Fear the Worse for Aaron Rodgers
New York head coach Robert Saleh spoke to reporters after the game and he spoke about his new star quarterback’s injury. Jets fans better brace themselves for this one:
“Jets HC Robert Saleh said they fear Aaron Rodgers ruptured his Achilles. His season would be over,” per NFL insider Ari Merov on Twitter.
Note that the notion about this being a season-ending injury for Rodgers is unconfirmed. However, this is a hypothesis coming from one of the most respected journalists in the industry, who has covered these types of injuries extensively.
We should get an official update from New York shortly. They will likely want Rodgers to undergo more tests before they make a final determination of the extent of the injury. If this is indeed a ruptured Achilles, however, then this almost certainly be a season-ending injury for the four-time NFL MVP.
Rodgers went down early in the first quarter following a sack from Giants LB Leonard Floyd. It is unclear if the Jets QB suffered the injury in that particular sequence, but Rodgers had to exit the game shortly after the play. He also had to get carted off the field, which obviously, is never a good sign.
