Ex-NFL Star Slaps New York Jets, Zach Wilson With Brutal Aaron Rodgers Reality

It’s tough being a New York Jets fan right now. Losing new cornerstone quarterback Aaron Rodgers to a potentially season-ending injury was an undeniably tough blow. However, watching Zach Wilson struggle mightily in his first start of the season is just rubbing salt in their collective wound.

Overly sensitive Jets fans may want to look away right about now because former All-Pro defensive back turned ESPN analyst Ryan Clark has some pretty harsh things to say about New York’s prospects this season under Wilson.

Speaking on Monday’s episode of ESPN’s First Take, the former Pittsburgh Steelers safety did not have too many nice things to say about Wilson, the Jets, and their title aspirations this year:

“When you have a guy like Zach Wilson, who you drafted No. 2 overall three years ago, you got to give him this shot,” Clark said (h/t Gayle Troiani of NESN). “You have to give him this chance. And what (offensive coordinator) Nathaniel Hackett has to do is tear up everything he thought about the New York Jets offense coming into the season, because all of that went away when Aaron Rodgers tore his Achilles.

“… And what we need to come to the conclusion of before we even come to the conclusion of whether or not Zach Wilson can play is the fact that the team that had an opportunity to win the AFC East, the team that had an opportunity to be an AFC Championship, no longer has the chance. No longer has that opportunity.”

Clark wasn’t done. He ended his lengthy tirade by blatantly expressing his opinion on Zach Wilson taking over the reins in New York amid Rodgers’ Achilles tear:

“I could not imagine the sadness of this locker room knowing you are going from Aaron Rodgers to Zach Wilson,” Clark concluded. “Those are opposite sides of the spectrum.”

Love him or hate him, it’s hard to deny that Ryan Clark does have a valid point here. The fact of the matter is that there’s just no replacing Aaron Rodgers. This is the harsh reality the Jets have to live with.

However, New York supporters will also have to accept the fact that at this point, they have no other choice but to hope and pray that Zach Wilson is somehow able to fill the gaping void A-Rod has left.
