New York Jets: It comes as no surprise that all sorts of rumors have emerged ever since it was confirmed that Aaron Rodgers is done for the season after suffering a full tear on his left Achilles. The New York Jets seem intent on using Zach Wilson as their QB1 for the rest of the way, but at this point, more than a few folks out there seem to believe that New York will be adding a new quarterback in the not-so-distant future.
New York Jets Linked to 4-Time Pro Bowl QB Andrew Luck
One name that has been floated as a possible replacement for Aaron Rodgers is former No. 1 overall pick Andrew Luck. The 34-year-old has been out of the game for five years now, but still, there have been whispers about the ex-Stanford star making a sensational comeback in lieu of A-Rod’s devastating injury.
Mike Florio of PFT, however, has been quick to shut down any rumors pertaining to Luck becoming the Jets’ new QB1:
“Regardless, it’s not happening. As one league source explained it to PFT, Luck is less likely to return to the NFL at this point than Dan Marino,” Florio wrote.
Andrew Luck Still Under Contract With Indianapolis Colts
Andrew Luck called time on his career in 2018, which at that time, took the entire football world by surprise. Luck was one of the top quarterbacks in the game, and at 29, he was still in his prime. However, the former Colts star cited his history of injuries as well as the physical and mental toll the game has taken on him through the years as the primary reasons behind his stunning decision to retire.
At this point, however, Luck is still under contract with Indianapolis. He is currently on the team’s reserve-retired list, which means that any unauthorized contact with him would amount to tampering — something that team owner Jim Irsay has made abundantly clear:
“If any NFL Team, attempted to contact Andrew Luck (or any associate of him)… to play for their Franchise – it would be a clear Violation of the League’s Tampering Policy,” Irsay wrote in his tweet from earlier this year.
This only means that if the Jets were really interested in bringing Luck to New York, they would have to do it via a trade deal with the Colts. Whether or not the Jets actually have a legitimate interest in Andrew Luck, however, is an altogether different conversation.
