NFL: The Green Bay Packers have moved on from a number of players during the 2023 off-season. Whether it was via trade or free agency, the Packers have ushered in a new era of football this off-season. Jordan Love looks to lead a young Packers offense, and the defense looks to continue the success they found late in the 2022 season. One former Packers defender who was recently released is now fighting for a spot on a new team.
Former Green Bay Packers Linebacker Jonathan Garvin Works Out For The Cleveland Browns (NFL)
Jordan Sigler of Wisconsin Sports Heroics recently reported that the Packers released Garvin on his birthday:
he Green Bay Packers wished linebacker Jonathan Garvin a happy birthday Friday. In a stark contradiction to the morning wish, the Packers announced they were cutting the former seventh-round pick a few hours later. The unfortunate timing of the cut went viral on social media Friday.
The Packers selected Garvin in the 2020 draft. He appeared in 38 games but started in just one for the Packers. Per Zachary Jacobson, Garvin wasn’t a good fit for the Packers when they moved him to defensive end this summer.
Now the former Packers linebacker is in Cleveland trying out for a spot. The Cleveland Browns brought in free agent DL Jonathan Garvin and LB Charles Wiley for a workout on Sunday, according to Aaron Wilson.
Garvin, a product of Miami (FL) played three seasons with the Packers after being taken in the seventh round of the 2020 NFL Draft. In his rookie season, he appeared in eight games, but saw his usage increased in 2021. That year, he appeared in all 16 games, starting one of them.
In 2021, Garvin had 1.5 sacks, 19 total tackles, and five quarterback hurries. However, he was not as much of an impact player as the Packers might have hoped.
Last season, Garvin appeared in 14 games, but played a higher percentage of special teams snaps (35%) than defensive snaps (23%).
