A Green Bay Packers insider recently commented on the suddenly popular idea that left tackle David Bakhtiari could end up with the New York Jets this season via a trade.
Per WSH Media Files, Mike Greenberg with ESPN suggested the Jets should be aggressive in trying to land Bakhtiari in a bid to keep Aaron Rodgers walking by the end of the season:
“ESPN’s Mike Greenberg this Thursday says he thinks another trade between the New York Jets and Green Bay Packers should happen. Appearing on Get Up this morning, Greenberg urged the Jets to make a trade for one of Aaron Rodgers‘ former teammates, Packers’ three-time Pro Bowl tackle David Bakhtiari.”
The clip of Greenberg’s request went viral. Many Packers fans on social media scoffed at the idea the Jets needed more help besides Rodgers to win a championship this season. After all, many Jets fans said before Rodgers was traded that the team was just a quarterback away.
A Green Bay Packers insider talks about David Bakhtiari’s future
Packers insider, Matt Schneidman with The Athletic, was a guest on 97.3’s The Game’s show “Nine 2 Noon” with John Kuhn. Schneidman said he needed to unload on the idea the Packers would entertain a trade with the Jets for Bakhtiari.
Schneidman made several Tweets dismissing the idea. He called it “ridiculous”.
I’m co-hosting @Nine2Noon
with @BillSchmidRadio for the next couple hours. We’re talking Packers preseason opener, this ridiculous David Bakhtiari talk and much more.

I freaking love football season for reasons like this. It’s pure entertainment.
The only reason David Bakhtiari would go to the Jets right now is to get the LUVN69 mobile back from Aaron. https://t.co/u6JSu9Bmra

He laid out his case to Kuhn. Schneidman said while he enjoys Greenberg’s entertaining takes and agrees the Jets would love to add Bakhtiari, the trade isn’t realistic.
“If the Packers were going to trade David Bahktiari, they already would have to the Jets,” Schneidman said. “He had the post-June 1st designation.”
Schneidman thinks the main reason the Packers wouldn’t want to trade Bakhtiari to the Jets is because the Packers stand to gain a high draft pick if the Jets have a worse record.
“Why would the Packers, after trading with the Jets, try to make them better, with, when healthy, the best-left tackle in the National Football League on planet earth, if that would help make the Packers draft picks worse next year,” Schneidman asked.
Schneidman also thinks the Packers want to keep Bakhtiari for the same reason the Jets do, to keep their starting quarterback standing up at the end of the season.
Schneidman’s logic on the second point makes sense. That is if Bakhtiari is motivated to do so. The Packers coaching staff was asked if Bakhtiari was all-in after Rodgers was traded.
They didn’t answer yes.
Could the Packers trade Bakhtiari to the New York Jets for draft capital?

But I’ll play devil’s advocate for the main point. Why would the Packers be willing to send Bakhtiari to New York if winning more games could cause them to slip a few pecks in the order?
For draft capital.
The Packers need Rodgers to play 65 percent of the Jets’ offensive snaps this season in order to receive New York’s first-round pick. Any less than that, the Packers will receive a 2024 second-round pick instead. If the Jets’ offensive line is as bad as some Packers fan mock that it is, a quickly injured Rodgers could very easily play less than the 65 percent Green Bay needs.
Without Bakhtiari, the Jets could lose more games than not if Rodgers is injured. But the Packers would only pick higher in the second round. That kind of would defeat the purpose of keeping Bakhtiari to spite the Jets.
There’s no reason for the Packers to trade Bakhtiari now. However, things could change before the trade deadline. Maybe the Packers aren’t competitive to start the year. Maybe Bahktiari and the veterans aren’t as motivated in Green Bay in late October.
Maybe the front office is worried about Rodgers’ blind side coming under constant attack every week. The Packers’ front office could decide trains Bakhtiari is the best way for them to assure themselves they’ll inherit the first-round pick.

Jets fan here
Here’s the out for GB – the Jets have a plethora of TEs
Take TE of choice plus some other compensation for T Bakhtiari
T Bakhtiari does solve all of our OL problems however, it would be one position less to worry about
