Poised for a long postseason run after an exciting 2022 offseason, Pete Alonso and the New York Mets are in the midst of one of the most disappointing seasons in the 21st century. Currently sitting at 59-68, they have no chance of making the playoffs, as they’re only a half-game ahead of the last-place Washington Nationals in their division.
The New York Mets Explored Trading Pete Alonso
Because of their disappointment, owner Steve Cohen gave the Mets’ front office the green light to sell off as many veteran pieces as they could, including the likes of Justin Verlander, Max Scherzer, Tommy Pham, and Mark Canha. Yet, after all their turmoil, the Mets held onto face-of-the-franchise Pete Alonso.
They did entertain the idea of moving him, however, with the Milwaukee Brewers being the team with primary interest (via Ken Rosenthal). The Brewers’ deep farm system seems like an ideal fit for the Mets’ rebuild, boasting the third-best system according to MLB Pipeline.
Alonso acknowledged the rumors in a postgame press conference on Tuesday.
Pete Alonso was asked about reports of the Brewers talking to the Mets about trading for him:
"I don't know what the future holds, but right now, I'm a Met and I love being a Met. I take in putting on the jersey every day and representing the city of New York." pic.twitter.com/0Sr1Q4ssSg

Pete Alonso’s under contract through next season, where he’ll become a free agent in 2025. Cohen and the Mets certainly have the money to re-sign him, but with the disappointing season after dishing out the richest payroll in the history of baseball, will he pull the trigger again?
The Brewers will be one of many suitors interested in the hard-hitting slugger come the offseason. Despite not hitting for average, Alonso’s still accumulated 39 home runs and 95 RBIs, good for a .856 OPS and 132 OPS+.
