The Green Bay Packers traded Aaron Rodgers to the New York Jets just one off-season ago. While Aaron Rodgers only played four snaps for the Jets last season, he certainly hasn’t stayed out of the headlines.
From recruiting a shocking amount of former Packers players last off-season, to his rumored incredible recovery from his torn Achilles, and now his political stance, Rodgers remains one of the more interesting players in the NFL.
While Rodgers has been vocal about how great he is at recruiting free agents to join his team, his own team won’t let that happen for at least one former teammate this off-season.
The New York Jets Go In A Different Direction For Their Left Tackle Position
According to ESPN’s Rich Cimini:
Securing a top performer in their offensive line overhaul, the New York Jets agreed to terms Friday night with former Dallas Cowboys left tackle Tyron Smith, sources told ESPN’s Adam Schefter.
Smith will sign a one-year contract that could be worth up to $20 million with incentives, according to a source. The base value wasn’t immediately available.
Quarterback Aaron Rodgers, coming back from Achilles surgery, will have a new-look line in front of him. In a span of five days, the Jets have added three starters: Smith, left guard John Simpson and right tackle Morgan Moses.
The Jets had one of the worst offensive lines in the NFL last season, allowing 64 sacks, which ranked 28th. Crushed by injuries and ineffectiveness, their offensive line started 13 different combinations. The revamped line means the Jets, picking 10th in the draft, won’t feel pressed into drafting a tackle.
Aaron Rodgers Won’t Be Teaming Up With David Bakhtiari This Season
Aaron Rodgers and David Bakhtiari were teammate for the better part of the last decade. It is also public knowledge that the two are very good friends off the field as well.
When Bakhtiari was released by the Green Bay Packers, it was widely presumed that the Jets would target the veteran left tackle. Bakhtiari has missed a ton of playing time over the last three seasons due to lingering knee issues that stem from his December 2020 ACL tear. However, it has been made pretty clear that he is on track to play in 2024.
It will be interesting to see where Bakhtiari lands. It is likely he will want to play for a contender in 2024 given that he is in the latter half of his career.
