The New Orleans Saints escaped with a narrow 20-17 victory on Monday against the Carolina Panthers to improve to 2-0 to start the new season. Unfortunately for them, the Saints were not able to come out of the victory unscathed.
At this point, it appears that former Green Bay Packers running back Jamaal Williams could be sidelined for Week 3 against his former team after suffering a hamstring injury against the Panthers.
Jamaal Williams Expected to Miss Time
Williams was unable to finish Monday’s game after being forced to exit the contest due to a hamstring knock. He initially headed to the blue tent to have himself checked by the medical team, but he was later seen heading to the locker room. The 28-year-old was unable to return.
New Orleans head coach Dennis Allen spoke to the press on Tuesday, and unfortunately, he did not have an optimistic update on the Jamaal Williams front. This comes via NFL insider Ari Merov:
“#Saints RB Jamaal Williams suffered a hamstring injury that may ‘take some time to get back,’ per HC Dennis Allen. Williams suffered the injury last night and didn’t return,” Merov wrote in his tweet.
Allen did not provide too many details on Williams’ injury, and no firm timetable was given either. However, the fact that Williams is expected to “take some time” means that he could miss multiple weeks.
The Saints face Williams’ former team, the Packers, on Sunday, and it appears that the ex-BYU standout will not be making a return to Lambeau Field in Week 3.
New Orleans Saints’ RB Dilemma
Williams’ recent injury puts the Saints in a real pickle. They already have a shortage of running backs in their rotation with Kendre Miller missing the Panthers game with a hamstring injury. Moreover, five-time Pro Bowl RB Alvin Kamara is still serving his lengthy suspension and won’t be available until Week 4.
With Williams now set to miss time, it seems likely that New Orleans will be signing Tony Jones to their roster. The 25-year-old made his mark on Sunday against the Panthers by scoring two touchdowns after he came in to replace Williams. Jones was elevated from the practice squad over the past two weeks, and at this point, it seems that the circumstances will give him an opportunity to get a more permanent role in the team.
It also would not be surprising if the Saints opt to add another back for Week 3 if Miller remains out.
