NBA rumors: The Dallas Mavericks made some big moves this offseason, with none being more significant that signing Kyrie Irving to a massive three-year extension worth $126 million. They also brought in Grant Williams (sing-and-trade) and Seth Curry via free agency as they Mavs look to bolster their squad ahead of what they are hoping will be a bounce-back campaign in 2023-24.
One player who’s future in Dallas still remains in limbo, however, is Christian Wood. The 6-foot-10 big man also entered free agency this summer, but as it is, he has yet to receive a contract extension from the Mavs — or from any other team in the NBA, for that matter.
NBA Rumors: Christian Wood Linked To Lakers As Mavs Look To Offload Big Man
NBA insider Marc Stein recently provided an update on the Mavs’ current outlook on Wood’s future with the squad. At thits point, it doesn’t sound like they intend to offer him an extension. After all, they probably would have done that by now if they wanted to. Stein reports that Dallas “has not ruled out participating in a sign-and-trade deal that lands Christian Wood with a new team if it is presented with such a scenario.”
One team that could be in contention for the 27-year-old is the Los Angeles Lakers. Team general manager Rob Pelinka earlier stated that they are “actively in the market to add another big,” and Wood seems to fit the mold for them. Stein did provide a caveat for LA, though, noting that they “are obviously restricted in what they can offer” given their recent activity in NBA free agency.
NBA Rumors: Christian Wood Has History With Bucks
Christian Wood has been around the block quite a bit during his seven-year NBA career. The Mavs are actually his seventh team already, and quite notably, the former UNLV standout also had the Milwaukee Bucks as one of his stops.
Wood’s tenure alongside Giannis Antetokounmpo did not last for very long, though. He signed with the Bucks prior to the start of the 2018-19 season and he ended up playing just 13 games. During that span, Wood averaged just 2.8 points and 1.5 rebounds in 4.8 minutes per game. His time in Milwaukee did not work out as expected, which is why it was no surprise that the Bucks decided to waive him in the middle of that season.
Needless to say, Christian Wood has come a long way since his brief Bucks stint.
