Jimmy Butler made all sorts of NBA news headlines after he came out with some highly-controversial comments about not wanting to be inducted into the Hall of Fame. The Miami Heat star made his remarks in an interview during the recently concluded NBA Finals matchup against the Denver Nuggets. According to the 33-year-old, he wouldn’t bother going if he were invited to his own Hall of Fame induction ceremony.
Kevin Garnett, Paul Pierce Speak Out On Jimmy Butler’s Controversial Hall Of Fame Comments
For starters, here’s an excerpt from Jimmy’s interview with Jared Greenberg of NBA TV:
“Honestly speaking, (I) could care less,” Butler said. “If we’re being brutally honest, if I was selected to the Hall of Fame, I’m not going.
“It’s an individual thing. I’m not for the individual type stuff. I’m really not. I’m a team guy.
“No. I don’t wanna go. I’m not worried about the Hall of Fame. I promise you. It’s an honor, it is, but I could care less. … I mean that too, by the way.”

Boston Celtics icons Kevin Garnett and Paul Pierce, both of whom have been inducted into the Hall of Fame, discussed Jimmy’s controversial comments in a recent episode of KG’s YouTube show, KG Certified. Garnett clearly felt disrespected by Butler’s take, claiming that he felt the Heat star was taking a jab at the “old heads” and their old ways.
Pierce then chimed in with his own take, saying that perhaps Jimmy was just being emotional during the interview and that he didn’t really mean what he said.
“I am sure if you get a chance to settle down, it will be a different answer,” said the Celtics legend. “I do not like this for me coming off of a Finals loss if I am down 3-0.”
“… You cannot disrespect the Hall of Fame. It is a hell of an honor. I mean, not everybody gets there.”
KG wasn’t buying it, though. He implied that Jimmy seemed like he was in the right state of mind and the fact that he doubled down on his initial statement proves that this is truly how he feels about being a potential Hall of Famer.

Jimmy Buckets, Heat Went Through Bucks In 2023 Finals Run
Pierce empathized with Butler in that he felt the Heat star was just not in the right place when he was asked that loaded question. This was before Game 5 of the Finals and at that point, Miami was down 3-1 against Nikola Jokic and Co. The Heat took a long and hard path to get to the Finals, and perhaps Jimmy’s mindset was in a much different place.
One of the teams Butler and Co. took down en route to the Finals was the No. 1 seed Milwaukee Bucks. Giannis Antetokounmpo and his team proved no match to Miami in what was a very disappointing series for Milwaukee. Giannis did suffer an injury early on, and that definitely played a key role in how the series went. In the end, however, Miami dominated the Bucks, 4-1. You can be sure that Milwaukee won’t be forgetting about that embarrassing series loss anytime soon.
