The Milwaukee Bucks signed undrafted rookie Drew Timme to his first NBA contract last Friday, August 25th. The news, stemming from an Instagram post by Timme’s representative, Seven1 Sports Agency, came after he played four games with the Bucks in the NBA Summer League on an Exhibit 10 contract.
In his short stint with the Bucks over the summer, Timme averaged 4.3 points and 2.5 rebounds in just 9.3 minutes. New head coach Adrian Griffin may see some potential in his craftiness under the rim and his ability to score, both of which were demonstrated quite often over several successful years at Gonzaga University.
The Milwaukee Bucks Could Have A Key Depth Piece In Frontcourt With Drew Timme
Timme spent all four years at Gonzaga showcasing his large array of slick moves around the rim, a commodity that earned him the honor of being the school’s all-time leading scorer. Despite his lack of athleticism, his innate ability to knock down a shot regardless of whatever skyscraper of a player was guarding him got him an average of 20.5 minutes per game as a freshman.
It wasn’t until his sophomore campaign in 2020-21 that he became very popular in the college basketball world where he dazzled fans with incredible performances (and an impressive moustache) to help Gonzaga to a national championship appearance. Despite falling to the Baylor Bears in the final, Gonzaga sported a spectacular record of 31-1 thanks to Timme’s 19 points per game. It was this postseason run that really put him in front of the eyes of millions of fans outside of the WCC and garnered him the respect he deserved.
However, a few years later, Timme found himself undrafted after one of the more prolific college careers in the country. Earning a roster spot at the next level would have to be earned with lots of hard work. Eventually, he signed with Milwaukee for the Summer League and his efforts have led him to this: a chance to make the Bucks 2023-24 roster through training camp.
Timme will be competing with players like veteran Brook Lopez, who signed a 2-year, $48 million dollar contract in July to return to the team along with his brother, Robin. Of course, Timme will have to expand his game outside of the paint in today’s NBA to ensure he can still score against the world’s biggest and most talented players.
Head coach Adrian Griffin is aware of this and can see the potential in Timme. Here’s what he had to say about him back in July:
New Milwaukee Bucks head coach Adrian Griffin, also coaching the SL Bucks, praises #Gonzaga’s Drew Timme: “Drew is kind of cut from my cloth. I wasn’t always the most athletic guy, but he plays with great intellect. You can’t speed him up, he’s calm, he’s cool under pressure.” pic.twitter.com/llEpZbJaj3

This may bode well for Timme’s future in the NBA as his new head coach was able to coach him firsthand over the summer and can relate to his style of play. In a league full of of superhuman athletes, it’s incredibly difficult to succeed as someone not as athletic, but can be done with hard work and intelligence.
Training camp begins October 3rd followed shortly by the Bucks’ first preseason matchup on October 5th at home versus the Chicago Bulls. The team then embarks on a three-game road trip with stops in Memphis (October 10th), Los Angeles (October 15th), and Oklahoma City (October 17th) before wrapping up their exhibitions with a home matchup against the Memphis Grizzlies (October 20th).
