MLB Trade Rumors: The St. Louis Cardinals have had a disappointing 2023 season that has also been full of drama. Catcher Willson Contreras has been heavily involved in rumors surrounding the team in regards to his ability to handle the pitching staff. It’s fair to say that it has been a shaky first year for him in St. Louis and things have now escalated to the point where the Cardinals have put him on the trade block.
St. Louis Cardinals catcher Willson Contreras is on the trade block (MLB Trade Rumors).
News of this surfaced in Bob Nightengale’s latest notebook. He subtly mentioned Willson Contreras in conjunction with a few other trade candidates.
The Cardinals have the greatest array of talent available with outfielders Carlson and O’Neill, infielders Tommy Edman and Paul DeJong, and catcher Willson Contreras on the block too.
Willson Contreras is currently in the first year of a five year, $87.50 MM deal. He has a base salary of $18.00 MM or higher over the next four seasons and then a $17.50 MM club option in 2028 with a $5.00 MM buyout. His contract will be a major factor in if he is dealt at this year’s trade deadline or not.
It’s possible that a change of scenery could drastically benefit Willson Contreras. In the right organization he could thrive once again behind the plate while also providing excellent offense. The cost to acquire him will be steep, but I would expect rumors surrounding him to heat up quite a bit prior to the August 1 trade deadline.
